In a Sunflower State of Mind

October 12, 2016

Location: Lawrence, KS - Grinter Farms

When the weather turns to fall, I start dreaming of golden sunflowers, cooler temps and enjoying those last few Indian summer days. Now, I've held a lifetime dream of visiting the sunflower and lavender fields of Provence, France. And one day I hope I'm fortunate enough to go. Since it wasn't in the cards this year I started searching for the perfect sunflower road trip right here in the good ole' USA.  And then it occurred to me.....sometimes we travel so far to the see beauty that can be found in our very own backyards. I think Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz said it best, there's no place like home. So we decided to set out and discover the beauty of our current home state, Kansas, afterall it is the sunflower state. And we were NOT disappointed. I threw on this adorable off the shoulder red dress, grabbed a sun hat, packed up a picnic (one of my favorite weekend acitivites) and hit the open road. Our destination: Grinter Farms, just outside of Lawrence, Kansas. Grinter Farms is the largest, free, sunflower field in the state of Kansas. You can get lost in the seemingly endless fields of sky high sunflowers and they even let you cut your favorite stems to take home! Donations are both welcomed and appreciated for their generosity. They have an adorable country general store where you can load up on goodies too. Follow me, and let's get lost in a sea of sunflowers!

Bonus: I've included a recipe and DIY sunflower arrangement :)

Grinter Farms is an easy drive from Kansas City and a 2 hour drive from Wichita, where we call home. We got to the fields just at the sun started to set and it was truly gorgeous. There are so many acres of sunflowers, it was a little intimidating to even know where to start. Lucky for me, I found a sunflower with my initial "M" marked on it and I knew that was my field.

This one's practically got my name on it! "M" for Melinda! :)

Trying to blend in?.....or be super sultry? not sure what was going on here..... But seriously, isn't this the cutest dress? So perfect for a picnic in the fields.

You mean I can take all of these home?  Which got me to thinking.....how many different sunflower arrangements could I make? How many sunflower recipes could I conjure up? The possibilities are endless. I think I've been taking the sunflower for granted.

I got a little swept up in the romantic sunset and farm fresh fragrant air, so I had to sneak in a little smooch :) Which was the perfect ending to a perfect day. So the next time you want to get lost with a loved one in gorgeous field of sunflowers, you know where to go, Grinter Farms, in the one and only sunflower state of Kansas.
